The small town of Damascus, Va
has many beautiful houses, some of which are now wonderful
Bed & Breakfasts.
Property values in Damascus have soared over the past few years due to an influx
of out-of-town buyers moving into the area. In fact, some homes are selling for
many times what they would have sold for just a few short years ago.
Yes, as you drive through Damascus you'll see plenty of large, beautiful houses
lining the streets, but the most special house in town is neither large nor
particularly attractive - plain is probably the best word to describe it. But
this tiny house on a tiny lot is very special to me because of something that
happened almost 79 years ago - my precious
mom was born there.
Mom didn't live in that house very long. Granddaddy and
Grandma Parker knew they
needed a larger house for their growing family, so they moved across town into a
big old farmhouse not far from where the
Rock School
stands today. Mom lived there with Grandma and her brothers and sisters until
she left home to make her own way in the world.
The old house where mom grew up has been gone for many years, but the tiny house
she was born in still stands today even though the years have taken their toll
on it. I know it probably won't, but I hope it remains there for rest of my days
to serve as an ever-present reminder of the birth of one
very special little girl.
