Icicles Along U.S. Highway 58 Near Konnarock, VA
Yesterday's picture featured a beautiful snow-covered landscape that we saw
while driving up U.S. Highway 58 from
Damascus, Virginia to the
Konnarock community. We
found the frozen scene pictured above in the same general area...icicles hanging
from the rocks alongside the road.
When you think of winter weather, snow is probably the first thing that comes to mind, and for good reason - we see a lot of it in
places with cold winters. But
although icicles aren't as common as snow, they can be just as pretty when you
do find them. These icicles were within a few feet of the roadway and they
covered most of the rocks in the area.
Icicles are among the most interesting phenomena in nature. Unlike snow or
sleet, they aren't formed when water falls to the ground in a frozen state.
Instead, most icicles are created when dripping water (usually runoff from
melted snow or ice) re-freezes.
Of course they can form anywhere that moving water is found, such as a
waterfall or places where rushing streams cascade over stones and splash water
about. But one thing is certain - icicles are among God's most beautiful
creations...regardless of the process He used to make them.
