The Linn Cove Viaduct
If you enjoy driving around and looking at beautiful scenery, you're going to
love taking a trip down the
Blue Ridge Parkway in
Virginia and
North Carolina.
Today's picture features one of the most photographed landmarks on the Parkway:
the amazing Linn Cove Viaduct (located at milepost 304).
The Linn Cove Viaduct is a bridge that curves around the back side of
Grandfather Mountain, suspending all who cross it seemingly in mid-air...and the
mountain view from the Viaduct is nothing less than spectacular!
The Viaduct is the most complicated concrete bridge ever designed and built, and
it was the last section of the Blue Ridge Parkway to be completed due to a delay
while an environmental impact study was being conducted. In order to inflict as
little damage on Grandfather Mountain as possible, the decision was made to
build a bridge around the mountain instead of cutting into it.
The Linn Cove Viaduct was
finally completed in 1987 opening the Parkway up to vehicle travel from one
end to the other.
