Baby Phoebes On The Nest
Almost exactly a year ago my mom had the pleasure of entertaining some unusual
house guests when a pair of Phoebes built a nest and raised
four babies on her back
porch. They remained there for weeks even as we walked right past them until the
youngsters grew old enough to take wing and fly away. Well, history has repeated itself
this spring...
My niece and nephews were playing in their yard next door to mom's house when
Mathew came running up to me and excitedly told me about a nest filled to the
brim with baby birds. I grabbed my camera and ended up with today's picture
which features yet another nest full of baby Phoebes perched atop a light
fixture in their storage building.
After doing a bit of online research, I learned that female Phoebes love to
build their nests inside man-made structures such as barns, car ports and
porches. And why not? These locations offer excellent protection from the elements as well
as a reasonable amount of protection from predators.
It appears that we're going to have a family of feathered neighbors every
spring, and that's just fine with us. Dad and mom always loved having birds
around the house and so do I. The Phoebes will always be welcome under my
family's
roofs!
