Windows XP: Change The Start Menu To Classic Style

How to change your Start menu back to the "cleaner" classic style

Windows XP has a spiffy new user interface which includes a new look and feel for the Start menu. This new style is attractive but somewhat different from what we're used to from Windows 95/98/ME. The task bar items are larger as well, requiring more screen area.

If you, like me, prefer the classic Start menu style, here is how to change back to it:

  1. Right-click the Start button
  2. Click Properties
  3. Select the Classic Start menu radio button
  4. Click Customize to add or remove items from the Start menu (optional)
  5. Click Ok
Now you'll have the Windows 95/98/ME style Start menu back. The task bar will take up less screen area and you'll have the old-style look and feel back!
