Will was born near Clintwood, Virginia, an area with a very rich Bluegrass tradition. He grew up listening to his father and brother performing in the home, and the ever present banjo picking influenced him greatly.
At age 14 he began playing three finger style banjo. He would spend the next several years playing in local Bluegrass bands and learning from some of the biggest names in the genre, including Dr. Ralph Stanley, Bill Monroe, Jimmy Martin, and many others.
