My mom received a beautiful
Black Eyed Susan Vine
in a hanging basket for Mother's Day, and not long after she hung it up on her
front porch she noticed that a bird had built a nest in it. Being a bird lover,
she kept a close watch on the nest but it appeared to sit empty for quite some
time - but not anymore...
Mom was sitting on her front porch the other day when she saw a jenny wren fly onto the
porch and disappear into the lush plant. After the bird flew away a few seconds
later, she approached the nest and peeked inside where she found four tiny,
gaping mouths waiting for a meal. That momma wren had somehow managed to lay her
eggs and sit on them until they hatched - all the while flying back and forth
occasionally for food - without anyone noticing her. That's quite a feat because
mom's front porch can be almost as busy as Grand Central Station at times!
After mom discovered her newly-hatched neighbors, she called and asked me to
bring my camera over and take a picture of them. It was quite dark inside the
nest that had been so skillfully hidden behind the vines, but I did manage to
capture the fuzzy image featured in today's picture. After adjusting the
brightness and contrast a bit the avian infants popped into view.
Mom loves it when she has company, and it appears that for a while at least
she'll have some every time she sits on her front porch. Mom really enjoys all
the birds that come to visit her, but she really loves it when they decide to
"homestead" on one of her porches!
