The Stevens Family Performing On State Street

The Stevens Family
(L-R) Rachel Johnson - Gary Laws - Beth Stevens - Douglas Stevens

Since it has been a very busy summer for Cheria and me, we hadn't had a chance to go to any of the Tuesday night Bluegrass music concerts under the Country Music mural on State Street this season, but a few days ago we learned that Rachel Johnson is now performing with the Stevens Family Band - and that they would be performing at the mural this week!

Cheria and I are two of Rachel's biggest fans, so we decided to make time to go see her and the Stevens Family. It was just beginning to rain as we parked our car on State Street and some nearby lightning threatened to cancel the show, but after a few minutes the weather improved considerably and the show started right on time.

The evening's entertainment started off with an unexpected treat when Rachel and Josh joined their mom, dad and grandfather on stage for a very rare family performance. In addition to being some of the nicest folks you'll ever meet, the members of the Johnson/Morrell family are also among the most talented. As always, they did a great job pickin' and singin' several old Bluegrass favorites before making way for the Stevens Family.

The Stevens Family has been making great music together for a quarter of a century, yet Rachel's amazing fiddle work and honey-sweet vocals blend in perfectly with their  distinctive Bluegrass style, adding a new dimension to what was already one of the finest groups in the genre. It was easy to see that the Stevens' have really accepted Rachel as a full-fledged member of the band and that she has a great time pickin' and singin' with them. All in all, it was a wonderful evening filled with great music performed by great people on what turned out to be a very pleasant evening in the Twin Cities.
