Windows XP: How To Turn On The Built-in Firewall

Turn on Windows XP's built-in firewall to protect your PC from hackers.

Hackers are constantly probing computers that are connected to the Internet in an attempt to break in and cause damage to the system or pilfer personal information. You can protect yourself by using a firewall utility.

There are several good firewall software packages available in both free and paid versions. If you're running Windows XP, you already have one. All you have to do is make sure it's turned on! Here's how:

  1. Click Start
  2. Click Control Panel
  3. Double-click Network Connections
  4. Double-click the connection that you use to connect to the internet
  5. Click Properties
  6. Click Advanced
  7. Make sure the box under Internet Connection Firewall is checked
  8. Click Ok
Your Windows XP firewall utility is now enabled, protecting your PC from hackers. Third party firewall software packages (available on the web) offer even greater protection if you feel you need it.
