The White House

The White House

Today's picture features what is probably the most recognizable rear view of any house in the world - The White House in Washington, DC. For over 200 years, this beautiful mansion has served as both the home and office of the Presidents of the United States.

Far from a typical residence, The White House is a massive 55,000 square foot structure encompassing 132 rooms on six floors. Each and every day, her halls and conference rooms are graced by some of the world's most powerful and influential leaders and dignitaries. On a day-to-day basis, compromises are reached and decisions are made within her walls that will impact the entire world for years to come.

The White House is a very special place for us Americans. Over 40 Commanders in Chief have tossed and turned in their beds there, struggling over decisions that have placed our brave young men and women in harms way, countless thousands of which never made it back home alive. It's where one president after another has tried to figure out which course of action would be best for the country - some with more success than others.

Our system of government isn't perfect, but in my opinion it's the best in the entire world. As a nation, if we aren't happy with a President, we can send him/her packing at the next election. And that happens fairly often. Most Presidents have been good for America - a few were not. But the office of President of The United States is worthy of our respect regardless of the quality of the individual who happens to hold it at any given time.

And so it is with The White House. All Americans, regardless of political persuasion, should be proud of that special residence whose occupants must change under our Constitution at least every 10 years. No matter how good or bad a President might be, he/she can only be President for a relatively short period of time, after which an orderly and peaceful transition of power will take place...and The White House will get a new set of tenants.
