Tim & Debbie Yates Performing At The Pickin' Porch
A lot of great singers and musicians have performed on
The Pickin' Porch Show
over the years, and Tim and Debbie Yates are without a doubt two of the very
best. The roots of both of their family trees are firmly planted in traditional
mountain music. In fact, Debbie and Tim both grew up completely immersed in
musical environments since their parents, grandparents and
great-grandparents were all musicians.
The wonderful music Tim and Debbie grew up with wasn't made with electric
guitars or synthesizers. No, this was traditional Old-Time and Bluegrass music,
the sweet sounds of which emanated from banjos, fiddles, flat-top guitars,
mandolins, upright bass - all acoustic, no cords or amplifiers required. They chose to perform
under the name Acoustic Heritage because it so aptly reflects the
convergence of their separate but supremely compatible musical family trees.
Tim's mastery of the guitar is simply amazing. During instrumental breaks, he
closes his eyes and it's as if he becomes one with his guitar. His perfect
balance of hard, powerful strokes and feather-light touch produce a sound
so sweet you'll want to close your own eyes and listen forever. Like most
accomplished Bluegrass musicians, Tim plays other instruments as well...but
after you hear him pick his guitar you'll wonder why he even bothers to pick up
anything else.
Debbie plays banjo in the traditional clawhammer style, and absolutely no one
does it better. Unlike most other clawhammer banjo pickers, she doesn't simply
"bang around" on the instrument. Her hands move too fast to really tell just how
she actually gets the sound from her banjo, but the melodies that come out of it
are simply spellbinding. Her music is never overpowering, it's just...well,
perfect. And oh, she plays a pretty darn good fiddle too!
As if simply being great musicians isn't enough, Debbie and Tim are also
excellent singers. Their voices blend with a sweet harmony that makes them sound
more like siblings than husband and wife.
Their deep musical roots continue to branch out with their adorable young
daughters Molly and Sadie picking up the mantle by singing a couple of songs at
many Acoustic Heritage performances. They obviously love performing, and mom and
dad beam with pride while they're doing it!
If you enjoy listening to great traditional mountain music, you'll love Tim and
Debbie Yates. If you ever have the opportunity to see Acoustic Heritage in a
live performance, you owe it to yourself to do so. If not, try to get your hands
on one of their CD's. Actually, you should buy two - you'll wear the
first one out by playing it over and over again.
