Foggy Morning At Redwood National Park
National Park Service.
The state of California is home to some of the largest and oldest trees in the
world: the magnificent old-growth Giant Redwoods. Imagine a forest of
living trees that are taller than a football field is long and old enough to
have already been around hundreds of years when Christ was born. The largest and oldest Redwoods
still standing are exactly that!
In old-growth forests, the majestic Redwoods are so tall and their canopies so
wide that very little sunlight actually makes it to the ground. This absence of
light leaves the forest floor in these areas pretty much bare, but in areas
where the Redwoods are relatively small - or where one of the towering giants
has fallen - the ground will often be covered with a lush mixture of spruce,
maple, oak and poplar trees as well as ferns and a wide array of wildflowers.
And of course these amazing forests are a haven for numerous species of
wildlife.
You just never know what you'll encounter when you visit one of northern
California's Redwood Forests, but thousands of people each year come to visit
and stand in slack-jawed awe as they look up at these natural skyscrapers.
