My wonderful mom and
dad lived together on this earth for well over half a
century, and like all married couples they had their fair share of ups and downs. But they
also had plenty of love to share with each other - and their children and
grandchildren.
Mom and dad worked hard to raise us kids. Although they would have liked to,
they couldn't always give us the things we wanted, but they always found
a way to give us everything we needed - often sacrificing something they needed
themselves in order to do it. In their eyes, the happiness and welfare of their
kids was much more important than their own.
While some of the other kids in the neighborhood had fancier clothes and more expensive toys, we had something much more
important: a never-ending supply of unconditional love. We didn't always live up
to mom's and dad's hopes and expectations, but we will always be their children
and their love for us has no end. And that unconditional love extends right on
down to their grandchildren, their great-grandchildren and their brand new
great-great-grandson. After all these years, I can still see that same special
maternal love in mom's eyes when she holds baby Jessee in her frail arms.
Dad went on to his heavenly home a few years ago, but mom is still with us. She
is still building her legacy of unconditional love and forgiveness much like her
beloved Saviour did some 2,000 years ago. Mom's legacy will live on forever in
the hearts, minds and lives of all who understand and appreciate just what her
love and sacrifices have meant to her family and loved ones.
Mom watched Glen and me hang a very special quilt on her living room wall
yesterday. This quilt isn't quite as bright and colorful as many of the
countless other quilts she has made during the almost eight decades of her life, but
it's the most beautiful one she has ever stitched together by far. You see, the
true beauty of this quilt has nothing to do with colorful fabrics, intricate
designs or skillful needlework. What makes this quilt so spectacular are the
years of love and tears represented by each and every stitch.
By creating a quilt that contains photos of her entire family, mom has built a
visual representation of her legacy for all to see, even her descendants still
to come who will never have the opportunity to know her as we all do. They'll be
able to listen to our stories and see the faces that go with the names that we
hold so dear. Mom didn't really make her picture quilt for herself. As usual, she really
made it for us...to serve as a reminder that some things are worth working for
and sacrificing for - and some things are worth remembering - like the amazing
lives and love of those who came before.
