A Bald Eagle In Flight

Bald Eagle

Today's picture features a majestic bald eagle in flight. One of America's most enduring and most loved symbols, the bald eagle represents America at its best - the America that our founding fathers envisioned some 230 years ago and risked their lives and fortunes to build...an America that is feared by her enemies and respected by friends and foes alike.

The United States Of America has taken a few hard knocks along the way...sucker punches thrown when we weren't expecting them. And they hurt - a lot.

There are those around the world who neither desire nor appreciate our way of life or the freedoms we enjoy. They have never liked us and they no longer respect us as they did in the past. And with the help of a few misguided souls here at home, they have managed to stir up discontent around the globe, giving America a black eye of sorts. And that was a huge mistake...

The bald eagle that proudly serves as our nation's second most important symbol after the American Flag was once on the decline as well. Decades of over-hunting, pesticide use and loss of habitat had taken their toll on the eagle population. In the latter half of the 20th century the bald eagle was placed on the endangered species list, but thanks to conservation efforts and a growing awareness of the problem, they are now doing just fine. All it took was a realization that the bald eagle is special in the animal kingdom and very much worth protecting.

And so it is with the United States Of America. We have taken our lumps with a stiff upper lip, refusing to lower ourselves to the level of those who seek to destroy us. They may never like us, but ultimately they will once again respect our resolve to protect our freedoms and way of life, whatever the cost in lives and fortune. Our forefathers set a precedent that still stands today, and when we finally get pushed one step too far our enemies will fear the power, swiftness and deadly precision of the eagle once again.
