Baby Raccoons Up In A Tree

Raccoon up a tree.
Raccoon sibling #1...

Yesterday morning Cheria and I pulled out of our driveway on a short trip to Abingdon when we spotted two very young raccoons crossing the road a hundred yards or so from our house. I stopped the car and jumped out with camera in hand only to see them scamper up a tree that was so thick with leaves and branches that I couldn't get a decent picture. Thinking I had missed a golden opportunity to get a picture of the 'coons, I got back in the car and we continued on our way...

Well, we pulled out of our driveway again this afternoon, and much to our amazement and delight we saw the young raccoon siblings playing right beside the road in our open field. Once again I stopped the car in the middle of the road and jumped out with my camera, and once again they headed for the nearest tree. Actually, it was a double tree with two main trunks - one raccoon climbed the left trunk and the other one scampered up the right one...

...and raccoon sibling #2.

This time the tree they climbed had relatively few branches and leaves so I was able to take several very good pictures - two of which are today's featured pictures!

We never saw the baby raccoons' mother on either occasion. My guess is that she either abandoned her young'uns or met an untimely demise. Either way, I hope the youngsters are old enough to make it on their own, and although they're only about the size of a large kitten they appear to be quite healthy so I have high hopes for their chances. Cheria and I will keep an eye out for our new neighbors and hope they live long and happy lives!
