The Parson Cummings Cabin

The Parson Cummings Cabin - Abingdon, Va

In 1773, Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church asked Parson Charles Cummings to be its minister, and he accepted the calling. Needing a place to live in the area, Parson Cummings built a small cabin about two miles north of Abingdon, Virginia on what is now Route 19. He served as the church's minister for approximately 19 years.

The Parson Cummings Cabin was handed down from generation to generation of the Cummings family for many years until 1968 when the Arthur Cummings family donated it to Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church. In 1971, the church moved the cabin to the corner of Sinking Spring Cemetery, the location of the original "log meeting house". It has been there ever since.

The Parson Cummings Cabin stands today as a monument to the history of Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church and the beautiful town of Abingdon. The cabin and the adjoining cemetery are among the region's most visited historical landmarks!
