Posted on May 18, 2012

With historical monuments dating back to millennia and popular tourist sites that were built much more recently, the UK is a history lover’s paradise. The UK’s complex history, rich tradition of royalty and dedication to preserving the achievements of the past has enabled it to retain many historical landmarks, attracting thousands of visitors each year.

The Pride of Yorkshire

In the ancient city of York, visitors flock to York Minster. This cathedral embraces centuries of York’s history, including the Roman origins that lie beneath the Minster and the medieval stained glass windows that date back some 800 years.

York Minster was an immense building project and was completed after 250 years. Tourists today enter areas such as the Chapter House with its obscure foliage carvings and the Tower, where visitors can look out over York itself.

9 Easy Ways to Save on Expensive Ink and Toner

Posted on May 18, 2012

The dirty secret of the printer industry is that sales of ink, toner and other consumables make up the bulk of the profit for the manufacturer. Consequently, buying toner cartridges at your local office supply store can deliver serious sticker shock. But using printers in your business is absolutely essential.

Put these practices into place and keep your toner bills from busting your budget:

1 – Send it Out

In-house printing can save small companies money by allowing for print-on-demand of marketing and other promotional materials. Child Safety Tips All Mothers Should Know

Posted on May 17, 2012

A lot of time and attention is paid to the threats facing our kids today. While the world may seem like an increasingly dangerous place, the fact is that it is not.

In the U.S., for example, just the past fifty years has shown an enormous drop in child mortality rates (deaths under age 5), from 30 per 100,000 in 1960 to less than 8 in 2011. Worldwide, childhood deaths are dropping by the hundreds of thousands each year due to factors like improved access to immunizations.

For example, a 2002 study by the U.S. Department of Justice examined child abduction rates for 1999, and while 800,000 children were considered missing that year, only 115 of those were “stereotypical kidnappings,” the kind you hear about on the news. Of those, about 52 were killed or never seen again. [Read more…]

A Breath-Taking Glimpse into Mexico’s Mayan Past at Chichen Itza

Posted on May 17, 2012

A trip to Mexico often takes the Western traveler to the tourist hotspot of Cancun. While there are those who will happily while away a holiday on the beach and in the bars, only a short journey away by bus is the pre-Hispanic city of Chichen Itza.

Offering a glimpse into life for the indigenous Mayan people who lived in Mexico over 1,500 years ago, this UNESCO world heritage site has some spectacular sights for anyone who has an interest in this fascinating time in human history.

The first thing you’ll see on arrival at the site from the main entrance to complex is El Castillo, a 98 ft (30 m) high step-pyramid built in honor of the feathered serpent god Kukulcan. On the spring and autumn equinoxes, the late afternoon sunlight casts a shadow down the north-west corner of the pyramid to the carved serpent head at the bottom, lending it the appearance of a serpent slithering down the steps.
