How to stop your basement from leaking

Posted on February 4, 2011

Does water stream into your basement every time it rains? The fact is ground water can seep through block or concrete basement walls or floors even when there are no visible cracks. There are three primary causes of basement leaks and their remedies:

Problem 1 – Missing, damaged or clogged gutters or downspouts. When gutters and downspouts become blocked for some reason they become unable to carry rain water and snow melt away from the house. All of this water gets dumped onto the ground, which in turn becomes saturated and allows the water to stand and seep into the basement.

Should you repair your garage doors yourself or hire a pro?

Posted on February 4, 2011

Like everything else in your home, your garage doors will need to be repaired from time to time. After all, they do have a number of moving parts, they receive lots of use and they are constantly subjected to the elements. If your garage doors are in need of repair you might be wondering if you should attempt to fix them yourself or hire a professional to do the job for you. Well, the best answer that I can give you is “maybe”.

If you happen to be mechanically inclined and are able to carefully and accurately follow instructions, you’re probably a good candidate for making “do it yourself” garage door repairs. If not, I would strongly suggest hiring someone to do the job for you. Here are a few things to consider before making your decision:

Eat out more often with restaurant discount coupons

Posted on February 4, 2011

You’re probably already familiar with the restaurant discount coupons that come stuffed inside the Sunday paper, but did you know that there are tons of coupons available on the Internet for virtually any chain restaurant you can think of? All you have to do is pay a visit to Google and search for restaurant name coupon (replace the words restaurant name with the actual name of the restaurant) and you’ll be presented with plenty of options.

McDonalds, Arby’s, Applebees, Outback and lots of other restaurants want your business, and they’re quite eager to get you to walk through their doors and give them a try. Hence the abundance of coupons offered.

Typically you’ll be asked to enter your zip code or city/state in order for the website to determine what the current deals are for your area, but in some cases you’ll find coupons that are good at any restaurant in the chain. Some restaurant websites will ask you to sign up for their free newsletter before seeing the coupons available.

Once you get to the coupon page, simply select the coupon(s) that interest you and click PRINT. It’s that easy – enjoy!

7 tips for a faster PC

Posted on February 3, 2011

Does your PC seem to be running as slow as cold molasses these days? Over time all Windows-based computers get clogged up with all kinds of “debris” and slow down, and if a little maintenance isn’t done from time to time they will eventually slow to a crawl. Here are a few tips for keeping your PC running like the speed demon it was when you first took it out of the box:

1 – Install top-quality anti-virus and anti-spyware programs and direct them to do daily scans of the hard drive. Not only can malware slow down your computer faster than any other problem you can think of, it can also help crooks steal your personal and financial information – indeed your very identity! Do this before you do ANYTHING else. I use and recommend Microsoft Security Essentials and Adaware Pro.

Lower your fuel bills with new replacement windows

Posted on February 2, 2011

If you live in an older house you’re probably spending a lot more than necessary to heat your home. Why? Well, there are a couple of reasons:

1 – Most older windows are single paned which means they’re pretty inefficient at keeping the warm air inside the building. Newer, more efficient double paned windows have an insulating layer of air or argon gas which helps keep heat loss to an absolute minimum.

2 – Older windows often have heat-leaking cracks between the glass and the frame which allow a surprisingly large amount of cold air in and warm air out. These cracks are sometimes too small to see with the naked eye, but the air sure can find them!
