Do I really need anti-virus software?

Posted on May 17, 2011

Question:

The other day I was listening to a popular “Tech” radio program when the host took a call from a man who asked for a recommendation for a good anti-virus program. His answer surprised me: “I don’t use anti-virus software, and you don’t need to either.”

He went on to explain that the only time your PC can get a virus is when you open an infected email or visit an infected site, and if you only open emails from trusted senders and are careful about the websites you visit you’ll be completely safe without running any anti-virus software at all. He said all those programs really do is slow down your computer.

Now I’m really confused. Do I need antivirus software on my computer or not? Your opinion will be greatly appreciated.  -Fran Singleton

How one extra degree of effort can make all the difference

Posted on May 16, 2011

The difference between becoming successful and missing out on what you deserve is very small. By applying yourself and taking your efforts to the extra degree, you can change your entire life.

If you’re like most people, you dream of owning a more beautiful home, having more success on the job, owning your own business, and obtaining ultimate freedom. The difference between you and the richest person in the world is merely, one degree.

Take for example the Olympics. Did you know that in 2004, the men’s 800 meter race margin of victory was .71 seconds? If the other guy would have pushed himself just a little harder, he would have been the one who won the Olympic Gold Medal, and that would have changed the entire history of the race for that year. A different name would have made it to the screen, and a different man’s life would have been changed.

Ideas for ‘Get Well’ sentiments that will uplift and inspire

Posted on May 14, 2011

Are you stuck for inspiration? Compiling a heart-felt message within a “Get Well” card is a difficult task, particularly if the person you are writing it for is suffering terminally or has overcome something life-threatening.

Studies have shown that positive encouragement, coupled with humor and social interaction has assisted those who are ill, significantly speeding up the recovery process. This is, in part, thanks to the projected wishes and positive thoughts communicated through Get Well Greeting Cards, along with the appropriate get well sentiments that are tailored to the individual.

Setting The Tone

The tone of your card is largely dependent upon it’s intended recipient, and why he/she is under the weather. A friend or colleague with whom you are well acquainted, may have broken a limb in a fall. Under these circumstances, it is generally acceptable to use some form of humour, or “banter” within your card, applicable to injury. Having said that, the tone of such comedy should also reflect the nature of the accident. If your friend was involved in something horrific, such as a car crash, it’s doubtful they will want any reference made to that incident as it brings back difficult memories.

Is my Dell monitor going bad?

Posted on May 14, 2011

Question:

I have a Dell desktop PC running Windows 7 and lately I’ve been noticing that the colors on the screen appear to be a little off – not a lot mind you, but enough to notice. Do you think my monitor is going bad?  –Grant H.

Answer:

Grant, your monitor might indeed be going bad, but there are a couple of things you can try before taking it to a PC repair shop or replacing it, and both of them are absolutely free – and free is always a great thing, right?

Since driver issues are common culprits in situations like this, the first thing I would try is updating the video display adapter driver and monitor driver to the latest versions. Even if a PC is new, the hardware drivers are often already outdated when you take the system out of the box! Here is the procedure for updating the drivers:
