5 tips for travelling on a shoestring

Posted on May 20, 2011

Travelling to exotic places no longer needs to be reserved for the rich and famous because wherever you are heading in the world there is always a way to do it on minimum dollars. Here are five tips for successful travel on a shoestring.

1 – Stay at Backpacker Hostels

One of your main expenses when travelling is accommodation. Fortunately you can cut the costs of accommodation by staying at a backpacker hostel. There are thousands of backpacker hostels around the world and there are few places you’ll visit that don’t have at least one to choose from.

In developed countries you’ll find decent hostels for less than $20 per night and even cheaper than that in less developed parts of the world such as Asia and Eastern Europe. You can book hostels online in advance or in most cases you can usually just turn up in a city and find a room.

Another great benefit of staying at a hostel is that you have access to a kitchen where you can make your own food rather than paying extra money to eat at a restaurant.

These useful devices tend to weigh less than an average paperback and can store thousands of books, all of which are available to read at the touch of a button. Low glare screens mean you can easily read in brighter conditions if you are lucky enough to be visiting a sunny country and battery saving tricks can prolong battery life for a few weeks so you might not even need to take the charger.

Posted on April 29, 2011

A drive-in theater is basically an outdoor movie theater where you watch movies from inside of your car. Drive-in theaters came into existence in the 1930s. The very first drive-in movie theater was opened by New Jersey resident Richard M. Hollingshead. Although this drive-in was only in existence for three years, the concept caught on and spread throughout the United States.

The popularity of drive-in theaters came to an all time peak in the late 1950s and early 1960s when there were approximately 4,000 of them in operation.

The rising cost of real estate over the decades and the advent of color televisions, VCRs and video rentals have greatly diminished the market for drive-in theaters. They are somewhat hard to find today, but they are still around. There are probably around four hundred drive-ins around the country. Here are five great drive-in movie theaters that are still operating in the North America:
