Posted on June 18, 2012

Living (and loving) Life

Legal statutes have been used for thousands of years to define the laws in different lands. These laws are usually meant to protect people and the public interest in general, but every now and again a law is made that is so strange or unnecessary that it piques the public interest.

Several of these laws are remnants of times past that just haven’t been taken off of law books yet. Even if that is the case, each of these laws is still prosecutable regardless of how strange they are.

Here are five examples of very weird laws that are actually still on the books in various places around the country:

Right Brain, Left Brain – Is Political Belief Due to Biology?

Posted on June 13, 2012

John Hibbing was a traditional political scientist. He studied elections, researched through opinion polls, and worked to understand why some politicians retired and some continued to run. “As traditional as could be,” he said.

Creating happy memories for your dad on Father’s Day can take a little more effort than the run of the mill bought in a store gift, but the extra effort is definitely worth it.

Haruki Murakami once told us that Memories are what warm you up from the inside. But they’re also what tear you apart. How true that is.

John Green spoke about ‘Paper Towns’ – ‘The town was paper, but the memories were not.’ Also true. Memories with your dad can be solid or ethereal. A few ideas are outlined below to help you create your own memories with your father on his day, and some of the other 364 days of the year. [Read more…]

Ever since men (ladies started later) played the first game of golf around the middle of the mid 15th century, it has been a tremendously enduring and popular sport. It’s said that King James II of Scotland banned both golf and soccer because it drew his archers away from their work of protecting the castle.

His successors, the III and IV James, kept the ban going for a while until it eventually did evolve into our modern game in 1744 with rules set down in the great city of Edinburgh.

Thank goodness that the game prevailed because millions of people, some in the remotest of places, love the sport. Grantland Rice said: “Eighteen holes of match or medal play will teach you more about your foe than will 18 years of dealing with him across a desk”. [Read more…]
