How to choose a swing set for your kids

Posted on May 9, 2011

Most every kid loves to play on a swing, and as a result swing sets are among the most popular outdoor toy items sold in the United States every year. Some sets are as simple as a couple of flat swings and a slide while others include monkey bars, teeter-totters and other specialty play sections.

When I was a little girl our family didn’t own a swing set. My dad simply fashioned a swing from an oak board and a couple of ropes and then attached it to a limb on the huge maple tree that stood in our back yard.

It’s hard to tell just how many “kid hours” my sister and I spent pushing each other on that wonderful home-made swing, but every single one of them was a thrill. Even so, we always dreamed of having a “store-bought swing set” like the one the kids across the street had.

The freshest summer wedding colors

Posted on May 7, 2011

Summer weddings are light and breezy by definition. Set the tone for your summer soiree by choosing a color palette which suits the season. Heree are some of the freshest colors for summer weddings:

Citrus Colors – Think about how refreshing a glass of ice cold fresh squeezed lemonade is on a steamy summer afternoon. That is just the effect you will achieve when you choose a palette of citrus colors for your summer wedding. Mix and match lemon yellow, lime green, and tangerine orange with abandon, as they all flow together beautifully.

An easy way to introduce this color combination is to use real fruit as part of the wedding decorations. Fill clear cylinders or footed vases with fresh lemons, limes, and tangerines for centerpieces. They can be made more elaborate by topping them with floral arrangements, or let the fruit make the statement. Choose one of the signature hues for the bridesmaid dresses and jewelry sets, bringing the full color palette together in their bouquets. Lightweight chiffon or organza dresses will be especially wonderful in the citrus shades.

Six ways to properly observe Memorial Day

Posted on May 5, 2011

Memorial Day is much more than the unofficial beginning of summer, much more than a three-day weekend. It honors the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice, giving up their lives in the defense of their country. As a solemn observation, Memorial Day has a set of traditions that do justice to the honor of our fallen heroes. For a richer, deeper understanding of this important holiday, plan to participate in these activities:

1. Visit the cemetery. If you have family members who were veterans, bring flowers and/or flags to their graves. Some cemeteries have specific regulations about what kind of memorials are allowed; be sure to check ahead to avoid potential problems.

Bring your children or grandchildren; have a talk with them beforehand about being respectful in a cemetery. Though this is a solemn task, it should also be a time to share good memories of your loved one who’s passed on. Let your children know why you’re proud of your late veteran. Memorial Day is a good time to pass on family stories about the historical struggles the family has participated in.

Is there anything more exhilarating than being in love?

Posted on May 3, 2011

We often measure our lives either by the material possessions we have, the achievements we have made (count the number of trophies or certificates you have in your study) or the success of your job or career.

But underneath all this veneer, are we truly happy? Many of us like to remain single because of the freedom it gives. But as we age, we realize that time will soon be merciless to us and we start to wish more and more to find the person we would like to grow old with. The lifetime partner who we can love and serve and who can love us for who we truly are.

Some people try to put a comparison between men and women staying single but, in truth, the feeling of emptiness and an unfulfilled life is the same for both. When the loneliness starts to creep in, the feeling of desolation takes over. This is especially true for singles who have experienced tragic love lives in the past and decided to give up and just throw in the towel.

So here’s a personal story and experience I would like to share with you…
