Ten tips for successful potty training

Posted on May 2, 2011

Potty training is a phase that every child will need to go through at some point but it is often considered by many to be a traumatic experience for both the child and the parents. But by following these ten simple tips, you can avoid much of the fuss and bother surrounding this otherwise ordinary life skill:

1 – Know when your child is ready

Each child is unique, so you need to recognize the signs that your child is ready to start potty training. Children develop at different speeds, so you need to begin potty training when they are ready, which is usually around the age of two. You need to slowly introduce the idea of going potty in the potty chair.

2 – Introduce him/her to the toilet

When your child is ready to begin the process of potty training, show him/her the toilet and explain that it is not scary or intimidating. Many people get a little potty and have them sit on it while you are going to the bathroom. If they have any older siblings, have them watch their brother or sister use the toilet. Children love to copy everything other people do.

Posted on April 26, 2011

I received a letter this week from a lady asking about my recommendation for a good, very cheap car seat.  She watches her daughter’s baby and wants a decent seat to transport her in. I receive many letters like this one. The motivation is usually that the writer can’t afford one of the top seats. I can appreciate the situation and applaud them for not looking for a used seat or “Hand me down” car seat.

Three Categories of Car Seats

There are three basic categories of car seats and I’m going to give a recommendation for each. They are:

  1. Infant Car Seats
  2. Convertible Car Seats
  3. Booster Seats

Infant Car Seats

Infant car seats are designed for newborns of at least 5 pounds up to around 20 pounds. They are rear facing seats. Rear facing seats are the safest seats for babies. They protect the undeveloped neck of a baby in the event of a crash.

Posted on April 21, 2011

In this day and age the trend for weddings is moving away from very traditional and formal occasions to more relaxed, fun and personal celebrations. One only has to look at the recent press to realize that even for a Royal couple where a strict protocol was expected, the rule book is being rewritten.

With less expectation to bide by tradition, many couples want their special day to be unique, reflecting their tastes, personalities and interests. However despite this trend it’s interesting that although there are several traditions that have fallen by the wayside and forgotten over time, there are still many wedding traditions that have stood the test of time, prevalent throughout the world and little changed from their origins hundreds of years ago.
