Kids Fishing At Hungry Mother Lake

Fishing at Hungry Mother Lake

Today's picture features some children fishing from the wooden bridge at Hungry Mother Lake near Marion, Va. Many kids enjoy fishing, but few have the discipline to stay in one spot and "wait for a bite". But these kids obviously do because I saw them right there on the bridge for at least an hour.

This bridge is a favorite fishing spot at Hungry Mother Lake for anglers old and young alike. It serves as the walkway between the lakeshore and the small island that hosts Hungry Mother State Park's amphitheatre. Virtually any time the park is open, you'll see people leaning over the railing with fishing pole in hand.

My dad was an avid fisherman, but he didn't enjoy fishing with children. He always said they were too fidgety, repeatedly casting their lures into the water only to reel them back in a minute or two later. But there were exceptions, two of which were my nephews David and Jerry. Dad didn't mind taking them fishing with him because they enjoyed fishing just as much as he did...and they had the patience to sit quietly and wait for a fish to bite.

I think dad would have enjoyed fishing with the youngsters on this bridge too. After all, they stood still and remained quiet, giving themselves and everyone around them a chance to actually catch a fish. Dad would have been proud of them.
