A Last Look At Some Autumn Leaves

Autumn Leaves

Well, here we are smack-dab in the middle of November with Thanksgiving just around the corner - and winter soon to follow. That means it won't be long before scenes of colorful autumn leaves are replaced by those of snow-covered branches bowing down to the ground. And although I no longer have that boyhood fascination with the white stuff, I hope we see lots of snow this winter because the ground is very dry and the water table is extremely low after a dryer than normal summer and fall.

As a child, I loved to watch the snow fall to the ground and pile up on the fence posts and tree branches. The first snowfall of the season would often begin with just a flake or two that I noticed in my peripheral vision. I would think that perhaps it wasn't really snowing - maybe it was just my imagination fueled by a young boys longing for snow to play in.

So I would peer intently into the sky, looking around, studying the landscape, trying desperately to see another snow flake. "I think I just saw another one! There's a couple more of them, now they're everywhere...Yep, it's snowing! Hey mom...!"

My enjoyment of snow faded as I grew into adulthood - having to shovel snow and scrape ice in order to get the car out of the driveway saw to that. But even today there is a part of me that looks forward to that first snowfall of the year. I might hate it the next morning but it sure looks pretty coming down.

There will still be something very special about this year's first snowfall when my granddaughter Olivia can get outside and make snow angels and go sledding. I'll just have to keep my snow shovel handy...
