A Swollen Stream Near Abingdon, Virginia
Well, we had another relatively warm and dry winter here in the
Abingdon, Virginia area which
has
left us with a very dry spring thus far. We received a bit of relief over the
past 24 hours however thanks to a couple of cold fronts that moved through the
area dropping almost two inches of rain on us.
A typical winter in our region usually brings at least two or three significant
snowfalls, and several smaller ones - along with plenty of rain. All of this
moisture usually leaves the ground well-saturated with water, giving our lawns
and gardens a big boost at the beginning of the growing season. But not this
year. This spring finds us facing extremely low water levels and tinder-dry
woodlands instead of the usual puddles of water and streams filled to the brim,
so the previous day's rain was a true blessing.
Now the farmers and gardeners can plant their crops with a reasonable assurance
that they will come up and do well. It also means that I can finally begin
burning the five huge brush piles that I created while cleaning out our fence
row!
This morning, Cheria and I were driving down a narrow country road near Abingdon
when we spotted a usually small stream that had been transformed into a small
river by the overnight rains. I just had to stop and take a picture of that
swollen stream... and muddy water has never looked so good!
