Sunset Over The Strait Of Georgia
Today's picture features a spectacular crimson sunset over British Columbia's Strait of
Georgia, one of the world's most beautiful and ecologically diverse bodies
of water. Two continental plates collided around 150 million years ago creating the Strait of Georgia and Puget Sound, which together comprise the
Georgia Basin.
The 850 mile long Fraser River system drains one quarter of the land of British Columbia before feeding fresh water and silt into the Georgia Strait. This
constant "feeding" of silt and fresh water work in combination with the area's mild climate to make it extremely rich
in wildlife.
The Strait of Georgia is extremely important to the people of British Columbia
and their visitors. The fishing and shellfish industries provide many jobs for
local residents and the waters of the strait offer numerous recreational
opportunities...including the opportunity to experience some absolutely
incredible sunsets!
