The Statue Of Liberty At Sunset

The Statue Of Liberty

Today's picture features a stunning image of a stunning lady: Lady Liberty holding her torch of freedom high as the sun sets in the background.

The Statue Of Liberty was a gift from the people of France to the people of the United States in honor of the birth of our new nation upon winning our independence from England. This beautiful monument was sculpted by Frederic Auguste Bartholdi, a quartermaster in the French Army. It was presented to the United States in 1885 after being shipped across the Atlantic in 350 pieces and assembled on Liberty Island (previously known as Bedloe's Island) in New York Harbor.

For billions of people around the world, the Statue Of Liberty is the most well-known symbol of America and the freedom she offers to all who legally make their way to her shores. For many years, boatload after boatload of immigrants got their first taste of America and the sweetness of their new-found freedom as they sailed past Lady Liberty on their way to Ellis Island.

Today, Lady Liberty's torch is still raised high and burning brightly, ever a beacon for the poor and oppressed around the globe. Her promise of a better future and freedom for all who endeavor to attain them still stands as does the proud nation she represents.
