Mount Fuji
Craig Hansen.
Japan's Mount Fuji is one of the most recognizable and most often
photographed peaks in the world, and Craig Hansen did a superb job capturing its
beauty by framing it with some dazzling red plum blossoms!
Getting this amazing shot from a park on a small mountain called
Iwamoto Yama (near Fuji City) turned out to be quite a task for Craig because the weather had
recently
been overcast with Mt. Fuji obscured by clouds. He was finally able to take this
photo at 8:30 am on February 25 - the first day this year that offered a clear
view of the mountain and the magnificent plum blossoms at the same time.
At 12,290 feet, Mount Fuji is Japan's tallest peak. This dormant volcano is
sacred to the Japanese people, many of whom desire to climb to the summit at
least once during their lifetime. And many of them do! In fact, of the 300,000
people who attempt to climb Mt. Fuji each year, 2/3 of them are Japanese
citizens.
Of course Mount Fuji is also one of Japan's most popular attractions with
foreign visitors, and a trip to Fuji-san is a must for any decent Japan
vacation itinerary. And as Craig has demonstrated with today's wonderful
picture, you can even enjoy the beauty of Mount Fuji without actually having to
climb it!
