Washington, DC is much more then just a seat of government - it is also a living
and growing museum filled with monuments honoring the men who risked their lives
and fortunes to forge a new nation where we can now live free of the chains of
tyranny... and those who struggled in later years to protect our
freedoms.
George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, FDR and many others
stepped up during troubled times and led their fellow citizens into battle
against the enemies of liberty and those who desired our destruction. The
monuments in our nation's capitol honor the vision, courage, leadership and
personal sacrifices of these giants of history.
Fellow Virginian Thomas Jefferson made several enormous contributions to the
birth and growth of our country. Most importantly, he authored one of the most
beloved and influential documents in the history of the world - the
Declaration Of
Independence. This short document put the world on notice that a new and
independent nation dedicated to human freedom was about to be formed at whatever
cost was required.
Jefferson also served as Governor of Virginia, U.S. Secretary of State, Vice
President and of course President of the United States. He later founded the
University Of Virginia, one of his proudest achievements. Today's picture
features the Jefferson Memorial, a magnificent monument to the life and
contributions of a remarkable man who left a unique and indelible mark on
the history of America and indeed the world.
