Fred Skeens Dancing At The Carter Fold
Over 1,000 Bluegrass Music
lovers pack the house at the
Carter Family Fold
in tiny Hiltons,
Virginia each and every Saturday evening to hear over two hours of great
Bluegrass pickin' and singin', but many come just to dance on the concrete dance
floor located in front of the stage.
The ages and skill levels of the Carter Fold dancers vary widely. There are
usually several young children, some senior citizens and all ages in between
sharing the dance floor and having a great time. One of the "regulars" is Mr.
Fred Skeens, a 77 year old youngster who enjoys dancing while balancing a
beverage on his head. Sometimes it's a soda can, other times it's a bottle of
water - but the Carter Fold audience always loves watching him dance!
Mr. Skeens also performs his "beverage dance" at other Bluegrass Music venues
in addition to the Carter Fold. On most Tuesday evenings during the summer you'll
find him kicking up his heels near the outdoor stage beneath the
Country Music Mural on
Bristol, Tennessee's
State Street. He
also thrills the crowd at the
Pickin' Porch on
Thursday nights. The talented Mr. Skeens enjoys dancing very much, and audiences
everywhere enjoy seeing him do it with a bottle or can balanced on his head.
The next time you're at a venue where Bluegrass Music is being played, take a
good look around the dance floor and you just might see a bottle or can moving
around among the dancers. If you do, you've probably found Mr. Fred Skeens!
