The Contemplating Blue Jay

Blue Jay

Blue jays are among nature's most beautiful birds, and this one is certainly no exception! Appearing to be lost in thought, the colorful blue jay in today's picture is probably just on the lookout for its next meal.

Blue jays can be found in numerous parks, deciduous forests, and residential areas across eastern North America from Newfoundland to Alberta, and all the way south to Florida and the eastern part of Texas.

Although the bluejay has a reputation for visiting the nests of other birds and eating their eggs, they actually eat mostly beech nuts, acorns, and various seeds. Caterpillars and grasshoppers are on the menu as well.

Sometimes it seems like blue jays are everywhere. They certainly are prolific here in Abingdon, Va! They love to make lots of noise, including mimicking other birds. If you live in a rural area or visit a park, you have probably heard the calls of blue jays many times even if you haven't actually seen one.
