Horse And Carriage At The Martha Washington Inn
Today's picture features a Horse & Carriage that can often be seen in front
of the Martha
Washington Inn in historic Abingdon,
Virginia. It was taken yesterday during the kick-off of the 2005 Virginia
Highlands Festival, a two week event that features daily live music and hundreds
of craft, antique, and food vendors from all over the U.S.
Traffic moves very slowly during the Virginia Highlands Festival, making it a
perfect time to take a Horse & Carriage tour of Old Abingdon. You'll travel
down Main Street past houses and buildings that were built in the late 18th and
early 19th centuries, then come back towards the Martha Washington Inn via
scenic Valley Street.
The cost of a carriage ride is very reasonable at any time, but it's just $5 per
person during the Highlands Festival! There is simply no better way to
experience the beauty and history of Abingdon than to take a carriage tour.
Of course there are many other fun things to do in Abingdon during the Virginia
Highlands Festival as well. For example, you can take in a play at the historic Barter
Theatre, catch a movie at the Moonlight (one of the few remaining
"drive-in theaters" in the U.S.), visit the William King Regional Arts
Center or dine at "The Tavern", Abingdon's oldest building (built in
1779).
Whatever your interest, you're likely to find a great way to indulge in it in
Abingdon during the Virginia Highlands Festival. And getting here is easy - just
take exit 17
of I-81 in southwestern Virginia and you'll be right here!
