Storm Clouds Over A Wheat Field
The American Midwest is often called "The Breadbasket Of The
World", and with good reason - wheat, corn and other grains produced by our
farmers help feed many people on every continent. If every American farmer
simply stopped producing food products, people all around the world would be
adversely affected - not just Americans.
The grain fields of the Midwest are shining symbols of one of the things that
make this country so great - the American farmer's ability and willingness to
work from daylight till dark so the rest of us can have food on our tables!
Every year it becomes harder and harder for the farmers to make a decent profit
with which to feed their own families. Most of them don't work the land to get
rich...they do it because their parents did it and their grandparents did it and
so on right back to the dawn of our great nation. It's the only life they
know...and the life they love.
The United States Of America was built on the backs of her farmers. Our growing
nation has always had an ever-increasing need for food, and the farmers have
responded by growing more and more on a limited supply of farmland. Innovations
in modern farm equipment and hard-earned experience combined with costly
research help ensure that they can continue to meet the world's growing need
for food.
But there is a problem - the spectacular success of our farmers has resulted in
greater competition among producers and tighter profit margins for farm
products. As profit margins decrease, so does the ability of many farmers to
stay in business. Many family farms that have been handed down for generations
are being shut down and sold off to developers. If this trend continues, America
and the rest of the world will be the losers in the end.
