Uncle Jerry's Bird

Bird feeding its babies on Uncle Jerry's porch.

My wife Cheria's Uncle Jerry and Aunt Eleanor are very special to her because they helped raise her when she was a young girl growing up as a member of the Cook family. Actually, their relationships with Cheria were more like those of parents than uncle and aunt.

Even though Cheria is now a grown woman with a beautiful granddaughter of her own, she still loves to visit Eleanor and Jerry as often as possible, and she still has that same twinkle in her eye that she had in all those precious childhood pictures. It's easy to see that she still loves them like any child loves her parents.

Jerry has had health problems for some time now that make it difficult for him to get around and go places, but he loves to take his scooter out onto the front porch when the weather is nice and just sit and watch the wildlife - and there is plenty of wildlife to see around their home...

Cheria and I were visiting Jerry and Eleanor this past weekend when a momma bird flew to her nest that just happened to be located right above Jerry's head. She then proceeded to feed the worm in her mouth to one of her babies even though the presence of "strangers" on the porch was obviously making her very anxious. But she paid no attention whatsoever to Jerry even though he was by far the closest person to the nest. I guess she was used to him being on the porch and she knew that he wouldn't do anything to hurt her or her "kids".

There are plenty of other animals in the neighborhood for Jerry to watch as well. On any given day he might see a flock of wild turkeys, a raccoon or two, or perhaps a groundhog. As luck would have it, while we were enjoying our visit with Jerry and Eleanor a deer came out of the woods to graze in the field across the road from their house.

We don't get over to see Uncle Jerry and Aunt Eleanor as often as we would like, but it's good to know they have plenty of "company" to help shorten the days!
