Spanish Grammar - Contractions

Beginning Spanish: A basic course in the Spanish language

The Spanish language contractions are very easy to learn because there are only two of them: al and del.

  1. The Spanish preposition a (to) combined with the masculine singular article el becomes al  (a + el = al).

    Examples:

      Voy al mercado.
      I'm going to the market.

      Vamos al restaurante nuevo.
We're going to the new restaurant.

  2. The Spanish preposition de (from, about, of) combined with the masculine singular article el becomes del  (de + el = del).

    Examples:

      El hombre del hotel.
      The man from the hotel.

      Un libro del autos.
      A book about cars.
