May 30, 2006 Roger Holding His Bottle With His Feet
My mom has album after album of wonderful old family pictures, and the one shown
above is one of my family's all-time favorites. It shows my brother Roger using
his feet to help hold a rather large baby bottle. Roger always was a resourceful
one, so it's no surprise to those of us who know and love him that even as a
baby he was able to find a way to keep sucking on that bottle after most babies
would have grown tired and drifted off to sleep.
They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but I think they're worth a lot
more than that. For example, you could listen to someone describe the way Roger
held his bottle with his feet a dozen times, but you would never be able to
visualize it as well as you can by taking just one quick glance at this photo.
A good picture is a literal snapshot in time, preserving forever a brief moment
in someone's life that is worthy of remembrance. Old pictures and good memories
are treasures that can never be replaced, but together they can tell wonderful
stories that can be handed down from generation to generation, never growing old
or fading away.
Modern technology has made preserving old family photos much easier than in
times past. One very inexpensive CD or DVD can store thousands of images in
high-quality digital format, and they can be easily re-produced and distributed
among family members far and wide. That way a tragedy such as a fire can't wipe
out the only copy of precious photos like the one featured in today's picture.
That's why it's a good bet that Roger will still be holding that bottle with his feet long
after we're all gone.
