Roanoke, VA From Atop Mill Mountain
Roanoke, Va is a beautiful city of less than 100,000 people, yet here you'll
find all the amenities that are typically found only in much larger cities. Nestled
in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Roanoke boasts a natural beauty and
historic charm virtually unique among cities of a comparable size.
The Blue Ridge Parkway is just a few minutes away, and Mill Mountain (elev. 1847
ft) which holds Roanoke's word-famous star lies within the city limits! Today's
picture was taken from the overlook located directly beneath the Roanoke Star.
From this vantage point you can clearly see and distinguish several major
landmarks within the city of Roanoke including I-581, Roanoke Regional Airport,
the Wachovia building and Valley View Mall.
This photo doesn't do the scene justice - the nighttime view from Mill Mountain
is simply breathtaking. If you ever find yourself traveling along Interstate 81
in southwestern Virginia, look towards the city lights as you approach Roanoke
and you'll see the star shining brightly atop Mill Mountain. Take I-581 to south
Roanoke, look up, and you're practically there. Just follow the signs beginning
at the Elm Street exit!
