Mount Katahdin

At 2,175 miles in length, the Appalachian Trail is one of the longest and most famous foot paths in the world. It begins in the south at Springer Mountain, Georgia and follows the Appalachian Mountain range northward through some of the most rugged and beautiful terrain east of the Rockies, finally ending atop Mount Katahdin in the state of Maine. Mount Katahdin is the highest point in Maine at just over 5,200 feet. The panoramic views from Katahdin's peak are simply spectacular, and so are the views of the mountain itself. Today's picture features a snowcapped Mount Katahdin reflecting in the pristine beauty of Chamberlain Lake. Mount Katahdin is located in Baxter State Park, which offers its visitors a wonderful vacation filled with activities such as hiking, canoeing, camping and fishing. As one of the nation's northernmost state parks in the lower 48, Baxter certainly has plenty of winter scenery waiting for you should you decide to visit during the colder months of the year. If you're planning on "thru-hiking" the Appalachian Trail, you can start at either Springer Mountain or Mount Katahdin and enjoy the sights, sounds and smells of the Appalachians as you traverse the eastern highlands. There are many interesting and exciting things to see and do along the way, such as the annual Trail Days Festival in beautiful Damascus, Virginia, but the views from the mountain tops are definitely the highlights of the trip - and Mount Katahdin offers some of the most wonderful views of all!
