May 24, 2006 "Until You're Home Again"
"Freedom isn't free." You have no doubt heard that saying many times during
the past few years, but its meaning truly hits home for families with loved ones
who are serving our nation on battlefields half a world away. To them, freedom
comes at a high price, but it's a price they realize must be paid in order to
preserve our national security and way of life. They anxiously await the return
of their heroes, fearing for their safety while at the same time taking enormous
pride in their courage and willingness to sacrifice all if need be.
Those willing to voluntarily put on the uniform of the United States of America
and place themselves into certain danger are worthy of our gratitude, our
respect, and our help when they return home. Duty called, and today thousands of
brave American soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines are answering that call as
we speak in Afghanistan, Iraq and elsewhere around the globe. Many of these fine
men and women will return missing body parts...or in a coffin draped with the
beautiful flag they are fighting so hard to honor and protect.
Freedom comes at a high price indeed, and those of us who were blessed to be
born in America - the most free and most generous nation the planet has ever
known - owe a heart-felt thank you to those who are willing to pay that price on our
behalf.
As a small token of their appreciation for the sacrifices being made by our men
and women in uniform around the world today, the wonderful people of
Abingdon,
Virginia have erected the monument featured in today's picture on the grounds of
Veterans
Memorial Park. As we approach Memorial Day, please keep our brave soldiers,
sailors, airmen and marines - and their loved ones - in your thoughts and
prayers. It's the least we can do for those who are fighting our fight to
protect our freedoms.
