Memorial Chapel At Emory & Henry College
Most colleges and universities have one building on campus that has come to
represent the institution in the eyes of the public. For some it might be a
famous library. For others it might be a gymnasium or performing arts center. For
Emory & Henry College it is Memorial Chapel - the campus church
building.
Since Emory & Henry is affiliated with the United Methodist Church,
Memorial Chapel is a very significant structure for the school's students and
alumni. Established in 1836, Emory & Henry College is the oldest institution of
higher learning in southwest Virginia, and it still bases its academic
philosophy and curricula on the same Christian principles that the founders
established some 170 years ago.
The college is named in honor of two men who were very influential in the
history of Virginia and the country as a whole: Bishop John Emory, a very
strong and well-respected leader in the Methodist Church and Patrick Henry,
one of the most famous orators of the American Revolution and the State Of
Virginia's very first governor. The foundation of Emory & Henry College was
built squarely upon the principles of faith and civic virtue that these two men
held in their hearts and disseminated to everyone around them.
The campus of Emory & Henry College is located in Emory, Virginia, a tiny rural
community populated with friendly people, a few horses and plenty of wildlife.
Its immaculate grounds and historic buildings make Emory & Henry one of the most
scenic college campuses in the country.
