Looking Up

Looking up at the sky near Backbone Rock.

Cheria and I recently visited the beautiful Backbone Rock National Recreation Area near Damascus, Virginia, a place we visit fairly often. It's hard to believe that a place as full of unspoiled natural beauty as Backbone Rock could exist a mere three miles from town! We spent quite some time walking around, enjoying the beautiful, rugged scenery and taking a few pictures.

We're always looking for pretty, interesting and/or unusual things to photograph, and between the two of us we took several hundred pictures of Beaver Dam Creek, the Mountain Laurel blossoms that dominated the landscape, a few large boulders, a couple of colorful mushrooms, and several other things that we encountered during our hike...in other words, the same things visitors always photograph at Backbone Rock.

After a fun couple of hours spent enjoying some of God's most spectacular creations, we began making our way back to the car. As we approached the parking lot, I just happened to look up and see the prettiest sight I had seen all afternoon - a magnificent blue sky filled with big, fluffy clouds that seemed to drift among the treetops. I squinted through the viewfinder and snapped today's picture, an image of the true peace and serenity that can only be found in the Creator, not His creations.
