A Farm Pond In Lodi, Va

A Lodi, Va farm pond.

Rural America has always been dotted with small family farms, and the ones that raise livestock usually have a farm pond or two for the animals to drink from. Some of these ponds can be quite large - like small lakes really, but most of them tend to be just large enough to provide an ample supply of drinking water for the number of livestock on hand.

Of course many of these farm ponds are used for other things as well, such as swimming, boating and fishing. I remember how my sister and I used to head to the woods to "dig up some fishing worms" as an incentive for our dad to take us swimming. It usually worked too!

Off we would go to one of our favorite ponds with the car loaded down with kids and fishing gear. Upon arrival, dad would head to one side of the pond and start catching bass, bream, or whatever was "biting" that day. Us kids would head to the other side and start acting like fools in the water. It was one of life's true win-win situations!

Sadly, many small family farms are now going away. The remaining livestock is sold off and the weathered old barns are torn down to make way for housing developments or a strip mall - and the ponds usually disappear right along with the farms. Every time I see another plot of farmland being carved up into building lots or paved to build a parking lot for a new "Big Box" store I realize that America has lost yet another branch of its agricultural roots.
