Kids' Bluegrass Music Jam

Kids Pickin' Bluegrass Music
(L-R) Jennifer Skinner - Zane Skinner - Jason Skinner - Alyssa Skinner - Josh Culbertson

Although Bluegrass music is very popular in the Bristol, VA-TN area, there are really no venues where youngsters can get together and pick their bluegrass instruments. Recognizing the need for one, Jason Skinner of The Skinner Family bluegrass band has organized a weekly Bluegrass Music jam session for children. Today's picture is actually a pair - one of the inaugural "Pickin' Porch Kids' Jam Session" in progress and one of the participants posing together afterward.

Jason and Jennifer Skinner are passing on their love for Bluegrass music to their children Zane and Alyssa by teaching them how to pick - Zane is already well on his way to mastering the mandolin and Alyssa is a treat to watch on the dobro! Now the Skinners have taken the initiative in passing on their love of Bluegrass to other children as well.

Although budding guitar ace Josh Culbertson (age 13) was the only child to join the Skinner children at last night's kids' jam, Jason isn't worried. He realizes that this was the very first session and hardly anyone knows about them yet...but that will quickly change. I predict that after a couple of months it will be standing-room-only at these wonderful get-togethers!

If you have a child age 16 or younger who plays (or is learning to play) a Bluegrass instrument, you're invited to bring him/her to the Country Music Museum and Gift Shop on the lower level of the Bristol Mall every Friday evening at 6:30 to take part in the kids' jam sessions. All are welcome regardless of skill level!
