Isla Mujeres, Mexico
Today's picture features Isla Mujeres, a very beautiful island that lies
to the east of the Yucatán Peninsula just across the bay from Cancún. At
just 4.6 miles long and a mere 547 yards wide, Isla Mujeres is small but it's
rich history, amazing scenery and proximity to Cancún make it a very popular
vacation destination.
In 1517, the famous Spanish conquistador Francisco Hernández de Córdoba discovered that the island contained lots of small statues of women along with the Mayan Temple of the goddess Ixchel at Punta
Sur, so he appropriately named the island Isla Mujeres - Spanish for island of
women. In later years, the island paradise became a favorite playground for Captain Lafitte, Mundaca The Pirate and other famous sea dogs!
Today, Isla Mujeres is a popular playground for vacationers from all around the
globe. It's amazing beaches, exciting nightlife, great food and spectacular
sunsets rival those of any resort in the Caribbean.
Thanks to Amy and Gene for this great snapshot from their recent Cancun
vacation!
