Our New Heat Pump

Heat Pump
The "outside unit" to our new heat pump.

When Cheria and I moved into our new home back in October, we found out that the decades-old oil furnace was severely cracked and completely unusable. After a bit of discussion we decided to replace it with a modern electric heat pump.

The first company that we contacted suggested placing the heat pump's "inside unit" in the basement where the existing oil furnace is located, but he told us that new ductwork and registers would have to be installed as well. He then proceeded to give us what seemed like an astronomical estimate for the work. With our expectations set, we asked around for referrals with the hope of finding a better deal.

We contacted a private heating and air conditioning contractor by the name of Tim Yates. He came out to the house, looked everything over and made a proposal: Since the basement was finished and the house was equipped with nice hardwood floors, he suggested placing the blower and ductwork in the attic and the registers in the ceiling. This seemed a bit odd at first, but Tim explained that it was a common practice nowadays and that everything would work just fine "up there". He also gave us an estimate that was roughly half of the first one.

Well, we made the deal, and after several days of measuring, cutting, fabricating and installing, Tim and his crew had our new heat pump installed and working. Since the blower was located in the attic, we expected to hear a lot of noise and vibration when it was running, but just as Tim had assured us we can barely hear it at all. In fact, that huge 5-ton heat pump makes less noise than the small 2-ton unit we had back at our old house!

Now, the temperature stays on a very comfortable 70 degrees Fahrenheit, a major improvement over the small space heaters we had used all winter. We couldn't be happier with our new heat pump or with the guys who installed it for us. Thanks Tim!
