Today's picture features one of the world's great engineering marvels and an
American national treasure: the Golden Gate Bridge. Spanning Golden Gate
Straight, this amazing 1.7 mile long bridge connects the city of San Francisco,
California with Marin county and the nearby city of Oakland.
The Golden Gate Bridge is a massive structure. The main suspension span alone is
a whopping 4,200 feet in length, and the two support towers rise 746 feet into
the air making them almost 200 feet taller than the Washington Monument!
The San Francisco Bay area is extremely popular with tourists. There are many
interesting things to experience in the region including museums, fine dining, sailing on the
bay, and several professional sporting events that take place on both sides of it. You can even
sail past Alcatraz Island!
Whenever you get a chance to visit northern California, you owe it to yourself
to see the Golden Gate Bridge and the Bay area.
