A Frosty Morning View

View from my back door on a frosty morning.

The Abingdon, Virginia area got its first real taste of autumn frost yesterday morning. We have had a warmer than usual fall, but a few days ago the daily high temperature dropped by some 30 degrees in less than 24 hours - fall became fall again! Even though we had known that colder weather was just around the corner, it was still a shock to the system and the psyche when it finally arrived.

Autumn is usually a very pretty time of year as the leaves turn red, orange, and purple, transforming the green foliage of summer into God's mosaics. But this year is different - a dryer than normal summer has caused the leaves to turn a dull brown color instead of the typical bright colors. You can see a few maple trees here and there that are fairly colorful, but nothing like we're used to here in the mountains of southwestern Virginia.

But there is still beauty to be found this year. I got out of bed yesterday morning to find the back yard covered with a silvery frost, the kind of frost that lets you know you had better enjoy fall while you can because winter will be here soon...but it sure was a pretty sight!
