Deer Seeking Refuge From A Forest Fire

Western Montana's Bitterroot National Forest is the setting for today's picture. On August 6, 2000, several forest fires converged there, resulting in one tremendous inferno. The fire engulfed everything in its path, including the wildlife that was unable to escape the blazes.

This photo was hurriedly snapped by John McColgan, a USDA Forest Service fire behavior analyst who happened to be on the scene. He saw that two deer had run into the river in an attempt to escape the heat and almost certain death, so he quickly snapped the photo using a digital camera that he was carrying with him.
