Three Donkeys Near Jonesborough, TN
Donkeys have been used as beasts of burden for thousands of years, and
they still are today in many developing countries around the world. And it's no
wonder since they're hard workers, they more than earn their keep and they
rarely complain!
There are several ways in which donkeys differ from horses, but the most
noticeable difference is in the ears - a donkey's ears are a lot longer in
proportion to their size. Their backs are also straighter which makes them more
suitable for hard work than horses.
If you travel to Latin America you'll see plenty of donkeys as you travel around
the countryside. Although they are used primarily as a means of transportation
for freight and people, they also make excellent pets. In fact, in many
households the family pet is a donkey instead of a dog or cat!
Here in the United States, donkeys are rarely used as beasts of burden these
days. They are kept for various reasons - often just to have them around the
farm. The donkeys in today's picture live on a farm near the historic town of
Jonesborough, TN.
